More And More People Are Worried About Noise

  • A new poll finds that two-thirds of Americans believe society has become noisier, with almost half of people saying they prefer quiet or very quiet activities
  • A quarter of those polled say they've stopped going to places they thought were too noisy, with bars clubs and concerts rated the “top noisiest” places
  • 41% of people say they are worried they may have harmed their hearing because of past exposure to loud leisure settings, while 51% are worried about what future exposure might do

While you may think that only old people complain about 'the noise,' a new survey finds that a lot of us are stressed about the noise we encounter every day.

The poll, conducted by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, finds that two-thirds of Americans believe society has become noisier, with almost half of people saying the prefer quiet or very quiet activities.

  • Things have gotten so noisy, that a quarter of those polled say they never went back to a place because they thought it was too noisy, with bars clubs and concerts rated the “top noisiest” places.
  • And believe it or not, it was Millennials, those 18 to 29, who had the biggest issues with the noise levels in public places.

And a lot of us are very concerned about how all of this noise is affecting us.

  • In fact, 41% of people say they're worried they may have harmed their hearing because of past exposure to loud leisure settings,
  • ...while 51% are worried about what future exposure might do.
  • Folks are so concerned that 72% of people say they’ve taken at least one step to limit their exposure to noise, whether it be moving away from the source of the noise, or even going to establishments at off peak times or wearing earplugs.
