We’re always hearing about how important sleep is to our health, but it seems for some people it isn’t always a priority. In fact, a new international poll of adults across five countries find that while most people understand the value of sleep, it isn’t always a priority in their daily lives.
The survey finds that globally, 92% of people say sleep is crucial to their overall health, with many believing it directly affects the quality of their lives. For example, 74% of people believe good sleep is key to a happy marriage, with Japan (89%) and the U.S. (79%) feeling that way the most. And sleep is so important that 82% of folks experience a negative reaction to just one bad night sleep, with the top negative effects including looking tired (40%), being less productive (37%) and feeling unmotivated (35%).
But even with all that being true, sleep is still far from a priority in most people’s lives...
- 84% of people saying there’s something else in their life that’s more important than a good night sleep.
- In France, 53% of adults say spending time with family is more important than sleep, while 48% of Germans and 46% of Americans agree.
- And while only 10% of people globally think work is more important than sleep, that number goes up to 13% in the U.S., with 30% of U.S. adults admitting they send late night emails while everyone else in their home is already in la la land.
