One of the most beautiful spots to enjoy the outdoors in northwest Ohio is Independence Dam State Park. And with Covid sending many people out of their homes in the past couple of years, the park location on the Maumee River has attracted thousands. With the help of $20,000 from the Defiance County Commissioners, the Friends of Independence Dam State Park were able to build two new shelterhouses; along with the addition of swing benches, playground apparatus, and updates for the kayak launch area. And they have even more plans for 2022: a sidewalk for the new shelters, a group fire pit, finishing the Butterfly Garden Path, constructing a concrete corn hole area, installing 4 recycled benches for the tow path, and possibly the addition of an outdoor movie screen, and portable ice skating rink. Some of the events being considered for Independence Dam State Park include wine tastings, 5-k run, and a Maumee River float.
