OSU WEXNER CENTER PERFORMS 1ST LIVE LIVER TRANSPT.

It’s a first at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.  The transplant center has performed its first ever living-donor liver transplant surgery.   In a living liver donation, a portion of the healthy donor’s liver is transplanted into the recipient, after removal of the diseased liver.  The surgeries are carried out simultaneously in different operating rooms.  Since the liver has the ability to regenerate, the livers in the donor and recipient grow back to 85 to 90% of the original size, and regain full function within six to 8 weeks.   The first liver transplant was performed at the OSU Wexner Medical Center in 1984.
