An incident likely involving asbestos contamination led to injuries at the Ayersville School construction site Tuesday evening in Defiance County. The Highland Township fire department was dispatched to the scene just before 6pm yesterday, along with Defiance City and South Richland Departments. Two subjects were found lying on the ground near an entrance to the old Ayersville School, and they were quickly transported to a local hospital. Fire crews were sent in with full breathing apparatus, and 24 other workers were located and removed from the building. The two dozen other victims were triaged at the scene; and refused transport. Since all these employees exited the building without proper asbestos decontamination showers, the Defiance County haz-mat team provided that. Employees were in the old Ayersville School removing asbestos with a propane powered unit. Holgate EMS also provided support at the scene, along with the Defiance County Sheriff’s office.
