A Henry County family is dealing with the loss of their pet, after a drowning incident at a rural pond. A passerby on state route 18 near road 11 noticed a dog swimming in a pond around 12:30pm today (Thur), surrounded by ice. Apparently the 2 year old Australian Shepherd had wandered onto the ice; and possibly fell through where the aerator was located. The Henry County Dog Warden arrived on the scene; but could not reach the dog, so the Holgate fire department was brought to the site. Before rescue attempts could be made, the dog tired, and went under the water. The dog warden’s office is warning pet owners, with the current ice conditions on ponds, it’s not a safe place for families or pets.
