Has The Surprise Gone Out Of Wedding Proposals?

When it comes to wedding proposals, we’re used to expecting a surprised bride who doesn’t know their partner is about to get down on one knee. But according to a new survey, for more and more couples that happy moment isn’t such a shock, especially when it comes to the ring

A poll by Weddingwire finds that while more than 50% of couples say the ring is still a surprise, quite a few are discussing that diamond beforehand. The truth is, 30% say they drop hints, or shop around before the big moment, while one-in-three will show their partner a picture of a ring they like.

But when it comes to the actual proposal, there are some things that don’t change. The most popular time to pop the question is still between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day, with 40% of couples getting engaged during that period. Plus, 82% of people still get down on one knee, while 72% still ask for their parents’ blessing.

But one thing that has changed is that proposals aren’t just between a couple anymore. In fact, 25% will invite others to witness the big moment, while more than half will tell friends and family in advance that it’s about to happen. And once the ring is on the finger, most people just can’t keep quiet. Overall, 86% will announce their proposal on social media, with 70% posting the happy news within hours of it happening.
