House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords announced new gun safety legislation. Speaking yesterday on Capitol Hill, Pelosi said the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 will be at the forefront of the new Democratic House agenda. The bill requires universal background checks for gun sales and transfers of firearms. Democrat Giffords was critically injured in a deadly mass shooting in 2011 and retired from Congress in 2012.
Several activist groups and the students who started the March for Our Lives movement following a mass shooting last year in Parkland, Florida were in attendance.
